Spread the love

Jay and Judy have only had their new Beneteau Antares 11 for a few weeks. They were originally planning on leaving Friday morning, but it was already blowing hard when I woke up, and I suggested that they stay another day.

Saturday looked like a classic Southcoast day with calm seas until mid-morning, growing quickly to Small Craft Warnings by afternoon.

I texted Jay around 6:00 AM and suggested he “get out while the getting’s good,” and he did.

PRETTY SWELL – Jay and Judy’s Beneteau Antares 11

Jay later reported a smooth ride back to Buzzards Bay just as the winds kicked up.

The Old eBike Gang Rides Again

Doc Ruel rented an eBike and joined us for our morning run to Madekat and Galley Beach.

It was a lovely morning for riding, albeit a little cool. The sun was trying to come out as we toured several Private Neighborhoods.

Lunch at or, The Whale

I’m not sure why, but we haven’t eaten at or, The Whale in several years. The back courtyard is one of the most serene dining venues anywhere, and the food is excellent.

Joan and Jean joined us, and we had no problem grabbing a table in the shade.

Terry rewarded herself for her near 20-mile bike ride with something called a Bad News Uncle.

Bad News Uncle at or, The Whale

It’s basically a Habanero Margarita with Passionfruit instead of sweet and sour mix. After a taste, I ordered one for myself!

Once again, the food was excellent! Tom and Terry started off sharing the Tuna Tostada

pickled jicama, aji amarillo, charred cipolinni &
sesame purée – shallot

Mrs. Horne and I shared the Smoked Bluefish Pate.

red onion, chives, salmon roe, toasted sourdough

It was super flavorful. The sourdough was more charred than toasted. This would be a great lunch on its own.

We all shared Burgers.

Perfectly medium rare…

After lunch, Mrs. Horne and Terry went shopping for grandkids’ clothes. Tom and I watched a little of the US Open on the Skydeck before our friends Harris, Nancy, Tom, and Kathy stopped by.

Did NBB Raise Prices Too Far?

As I sat on the Skydeck, taking in the view, I noticed how empty the Boat Basin was.

As I mentioned in the first report, the Nantucket Boat Basin dramatically raised dockage fees for 2024.

Since 2021, the Boat Basin has sold out every Friday and Saturday night of Father’s Day weekend. This past weekend, it was 50% at best.

Perhaps NBB should revisit their early June pricing…

Tom and Terry departed on the 4:00 ferry before we met Tom and Kathy for dinner.

Kathy and Tom

They arrived Friday afternoon but missed the cocktail party due to a late round of golf.

The Brotherhood of Thieves

We dined at Brotherhood of Thieves for our final dinner of Nantucket 2024.

Mrs. Horne started with a Painkiller Mocktail.

Its basically a Pina Collata with a twist or orange.

We also shared a delightful Pinot called Pike Road.

The Brotherhood of Theives serves incredible Sushi.

Of course, I can’t pass on the Boom Boom Sprimp.

sesame seeds

After dinner, we had a pleasant stroll back to NBB.

The Ride Home

We were prepared to stay until Monday or beyond, but the weather window on Sunday morning looked like the best for the next few days.

We planned to form a three-boat flotilla for the 25-mile run to Woods Hole. Captain Tom took the lead in the somewhat sloppy seas.

Amazing Grace and Tom’s Riviera 54 ate up the chop at 24 MPH, but Doc Ruel’s 34 Pursuit had to drop to under 20 MPH to find a smooth ride. We offered to slow down and let them run in our wake, but Doc waived us off.

Once we cleared the shoals and headed south, things smoothed out, and we ran all the way to Onset at 30 MPH.

Nantucket 2024 delivered the best weather we’ve ever experienced on the island in June. We also enjoyed more friends and biking than before.

It’s still my favorite destination for boating…
