I started boating a very long time ago. In the sixties my father bought a 12’ dory and as soon as he let me, I spent my summers buzzing around Buzzards Bay.
I have loved boating ever since. We bought our first boat 20 years ago and we recently moved up from Vigilant (a Back Cove 41) to Relentless (a Sabre 48 Fly Bridge),,,
People ask me if I’m nervous about driving a bigger boat and the answer is always NO. Bow and stern thrusters, joysticks that operate pods, and anchors that can be electronically dropped and raised from the helm turn piloting into an arm chair sport.
Operating the boat isn’t a problem, but after decades of ski racing on New England Hardpack (AKA Ice), my knees don’t work very well and nowadays even getting on and off the dock can be painful.
The Biggest Pain of All – Cleaning
When the cruise is over, and the boat is back in her slip, the ultimate physical challenge rears its ugly head – cleaning the boat!
Unlike a house where every room has square corners and the floors are all perfectly flat for vacuuming, boats are full of nooks and crannies that you can’t reach without crawling around on your knees.
I have no doubt that I’ll be able to pilot our boat as long as I can still drive a car, but I’m nearing the point where I just can’t get down on my hands and knees and clean anymore.
Fighting Father Time
So when decided to step up the Sabre 48, we also decided to start hiring people to keep her clean.
Falmouth Boat Cleaning
We bought Relentless in Florida. She has a flying bridge and thus cannot be trucked due to her 25’ height. The seller had her brought to Massachusetts by water and that meant a Captain and crew living on her in the open sea.
Our new, clearly filthy boat, seemed like a great opportunity to try out a professional boat cleaning service and that’s where Falmouth Boat Cleaning came in.
FBC offers a wide range of services, but we went with the $10/foot Living The Dream package.
Jeff did a great job deep cleaning all remnants of the trip from Florida and crew.
One of the services FBC offers is teak cleaning. Relentless has low hours and in most respects she looks like a new boat. That is, except for the teak deck which had turned dark gray/brown.
Jeff did an incredible job bringing the teak back showroom condition…
If you’re like me and you love a clean boat, but your body just can’t do it anymore, consider getting professional help!
And if you’re anywhere near Cape Cod, give Falmouth Boat Cleaning a shot. It may be just what you need to stay on the water during your golden years…
