Hilda Elsie Horne, born in Ocker, Texas, on April 6, 1923, peacefully passed away on August 30, 2023, in Boxborough, Massachusetts. She married her beloved husband, the late Clyde James Horne, in Childress, Texas, on October 6, 1944. She was the devoted mother of Charles (deceased), David (wife Susan), Mark (wife Louanne), and Barry (wife Maurine). Hilda leaves a legacy of love that extends through her eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Hilda had a heart of gold and found her greatest joy in caring for those around her. Her warm smile and nurturing spirit were a source of comfort to all who knew her, and these attributes were portrayed through her many years as a Registered Nurse. She was a pillar of strength and compassion within her family and her community.
Her love for Pease’s Point and Cedar Key, where she spent many cherished moments with family and friends, brought her immense happiness. Hilda had a passion for culinary delights, and her clam chowder and fried chicken were legendary, often bringing loved ones together around the dining table. Hilda was an avid gardener in her earlier days and took great pride in the beautiful flowers surrounding her homes. She also loved animals, especially her Westies, Duffy and Duffy II.
One of the most enduring chapters of her life was spent sailing with her beloved Clyde. Together, along with family and friends, they navigated life’s waters with grace and shared countless sunsets on the open sea, creating memories that will forever be treasured.
Hilda’s unwavering faith was a guiding light in her life. She was a devoted Christian and an active member of Mount Calvary Church, where she found solace, community, and purpose. In the last few years, she looked forward to her conversations with Pastor Eric when he visited her at her home.
In recognition of her longevity and contributions to her community, Hilda was awarded the Boxborough Cane in 2021 by the Boxborough Historical Society, which was a testament to her status as the oldest resident in town. On May 7, 2023, family, friends, and the town of Boxborough gathered at her home to celebrate her 100th birthday. She was very grateful to the Boxborough Police and Fire Department for the care and response they gave her in her senior years.
Thanks to loving caregiving from Jeff and Liz Nelson, Mercy Kirika, and her team, Hilda was able to spend her final years in comfort at her home in Boxborough. The family is forever grateful for their caring ways.
Hilda Elsie Horne will be remembered for her boundless love, her caring nature, and her enduring faith. She has left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her memory will live on through her family and friends, a testament to a life well lived in service to others.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Mount Calvary Church in Hilda’s memory.
Funeral services for Hilda will be held at Mt. Calvary Church in Acton (472 Massachusetts Ave Acton) on September 14 at 11:00 AM, followed by interment at Mount Hope Cemetery (166 Central Street, Acton). Family and friends are invited to join in honoring her memory and offering support during this time of remembrance and reflection. A Celebration honoring Hilda’s life will also be held in Mattapoisett in early October.

I am very sorry Dave to hear about your Mom. You always have such nice things to say about her. Joyce
David – we are heartbroken to learn of Hilda’s passing. We had hoped to be able to get back to see her the last few years, but John’s health hasn’t been good enough to travel. Hilda was a great Friend and wonderful Lady. May she rest in peace now reunited with Clyde and her Duffies. Barbara and John Schrader
