This new page is dedicated to helping fellow mariners deal with FOG.

As mentioned before, I am a confident captain in fog, but given the choice, I prefer to be docked somewhere rather than staring at the radar screen.

The local TV weather or the marine forecast occasionally mentions the chances for fog, but that’s about it.

Having recently entered Rockland in zero visibility, I’m not sure I’d do it again.

Passing Owls Head – Rockland, Maine

I do know that I will never venture through Woods Hole in thick fog again.

Woods Hole in the Fog

I took this photo a few years back, entering Woods Hole from Buzzards Bay in 50’ visibility. The problem with Woods Hole in the fog is that there are so many cans and nuns on the radar screen that it’s tough to pick up another boat.

And the big ferries do not slow down in the fog.

The New England Webcam Page

I have concluded that the only tool available for anticipating fog is a live webcam that lets you see the current conditions.

If there is any fog around and I’m heading through Woods Hole, I will put their webcam on my iPhone and set it on the dashboard. If I see fog, I will divert to Quicks Hole.

The problem with online webcams is that so many of them are dead links or set on pages full of video ads that look like a webcam.

The My Buzzards Bay, New England Webcam Page has no ads, and all the links work going directly to YouTube live cams.

Please use this page whenever you need a live fog report from any of these locales.

The link to the page is located directly above the My Buzzards Bay header on the home page.

Let’s Crowdsource This!

I want to challenge all of you to help me with this page. If you find one of my links has gone dead, email me at davidjameshorne@gmail.com. Likewise, if you discover a good webcam, let me know, and I’ll add it to this page.
