Spread the love

Thursday morning we made the 90-minute run from Mystic to Greenport. As mentioned yesterday, it’s a long windy journey up the Mystic River to reach Fort Rachel.

Yesterday I shot a few more photos of this picturesque cruise.

Once you clear Fisher Island, you encounter some very interesting seas crossing Long Island Sound. They are created by a combination of radically changing depths, sea currents, and wind tunnels shaped by the islands.

As we cleared Fisher Island, the depth plunged from 80’ to 350’ in less than a minute. We entered a stretch of furious chop, that lasted about two minutes.

We’d been to Mitchell Park in 2021 and really enjoyed the marina and town of Greenport. That said, I was disappointed that they assigned us to slip A3.

This is the same slip they gave us for Relentless (Sabre 48). It’s way too small for Amazing Grace and presented quite a challenge to back into the tight slip.

We are only a few feet from the boat next to us and the bow sticks out from the finger pier.

Lucharitos

After trying to wash the salt spray off the boat, we took a short walk to town and returned to one of my favorite Mexican restaurants Lucharitos, for lunch.

It’s very bright and colorful.

There is an odd old-time wrestler theme throughout the restaurant…

Apparently, the name is derived from Lucha Libre, which is a special type of stylized wrestling (Free Fighting) where the fighters wear bright-colored masks.

After the tricky docky, I needed more than a beer, so I tried their “World Famous” Jalapeno Margarita.

Lucharitos Jalepeno Margarita – $14

As usual, the food was fresh and favorable.

Burrito Bowl – $15
pulled chicken, rice, lettuce, black beans, pico de gallo, sour cream, guacamole, pickled red cabbage, & shredded cheese
Classic Chicken Quesadilla – $15
sour cream, salsa fresca, jalapeno, and pickled cabbage

I ordered two tacos – a Carne Asada and a Carnitas.

Carne Asada and Carnitas Tacos – $7 Each
Marinated & grilled flank steak with cilantro,
onion, mint radish, and salsa verde
Citrus braised pork with cilantro,
onion, mint radish, and salsa verde.
Black Bean Side – $4.50

Downtown Greenport

After lunch, we toured downtown Greenport and did a little shopping. Somehow the little village manages to be hip and retro at the same time.

My favorite store is the Marine Supply store, where you can get dock lines or a $200 Helly Hansen vest.

The forecast for Thursday was 80° but felt much cooler as we hung out on the Skydeck and took in the sights and sounds of Mitchell Park

The Lovely Mrs. Horne
Jake (sporting his new Maritimo hat)
Nautical Miss Peggy

We ended up spending four days in Greenport in 2021 thanks to two passing hurricanes. As a result, we have eaten in all the popular spots.

As I was planning the trip I came upon a new restaurant that I knew we’d have to try on our one night in Greenport.

Noah’s

Noah’s is definitely on the hip side of Greenport.

I had screwed up and made our dinner reservations for the wrong night, but the manager accommodated us nicely at a table by the window.

The Captain, Mrs. Horne, Peggy, and Jake

I was expecting a seafood eatery, but instead, we found a rather eclectic menu.

Menu – Noah’s Greenport

Certainly interesting, but it was a challenge to navigate and select our dinner.

Crescent Farm Duck Confit – $36
Sauteed Corn, Baby Spinach, Cherry Tomatoes, Frisee, Corn Puree
Lump Blue Claw Crab Cake – $22
All Crab No Bread, Sweet Corn Relish, Popcorn Corn Shoots
Grilled Octopus Skewers – $22
Smoked Paprika, Fingerlings, Olives, Arugula,
Piquillo Peppers, Basil
Watermelon Salad – $16
Local Wild Arugula, Feta Cheese, Mint,
Crushed Peanuts, Lime Vinaigrette
Mexican Style Street Corn – $15
Chipotle Aioli, Queso Fresco, Micro Cilantro, Crispy Tortilla Chips
Butter Lettuce Salad – $15
Grilled Peaches, Blueberries, Toasted Almonds,
Vegan Green Goddess

Everyone enjoyed their meals, but our server was a little curt. The star was the Mexican Street Corn. My octopus was perfectly cooked but could have used a sauce of some kind. I wasn’t crazy about discovering that fingerlings were cold and part of a salad.

Like most hip restaurants, the portions were small and we all cleaned our plates. That, combined with the mostly healthy dishes we had for dinner, left us open to dessert.

We shared two…

Cinnamon Sugar Beignets – $10
Salty Bourbon Caramel Sauce
Key Lime Pie – $10
Graham Cracker, Whipped Cream, Candied Lime

The desserts were fabulous. I haven’t eaten a donut in fifty years, but the Cinnamon Sugar Beignets were ridiculously good.

All in all, it was a good meal, but I’m not sure I’d rush back. Perhaps were spoiled by all the great meals we’ve enjoyed all week.

After a short walk home we turned in watched the second half of the movie Road House. Its very entertaining and highly recommended – if you like that sort of thing.
