Spread the love

We’re in Oak Bluffs for the Labor Day holiday weekend. We arrived Friday, biked to Edgartown on Saturday, and decided to take advantage of our close proximity to Coop de Ville for dinner.

Room Service

If you are ever tied up at Dockside and want to eat on your boat, Petey (Coop de Ville owner) will gladly offer room service and deliver a meal to your boat.

We give the server a bigger tip, but more than make up for it by mixing our beverages on the boat.

I’m happy to report that the dishes were both delicious and hot…

LOCAL HAND-DUG STEAMERS – $29
at Coop de Ville
The SINGLE (ten wings) Garlic Parmesean – $19
at Coop de Ville
BASKET OF ONION RINGS – $12
at Coop de Ville

Petey gave us first-class service delivering our food on serving dishes rather than take-out boxes.

Speaking of Petey, he’s had quite a month. Last week Massachusetts Governor Maura Healy had lunch at the Coop and discussed some of the issues restauranteurs are facing in the Bay State (taxes).

He was also recognized in the Vineyard Gazette for the restaurant’s 40th anniversary.

Congratulations Petey!

Gray Sunday

As you may know, we enjoy a gray, even rainy, day on the boat now and then. It rained Saturday night and the forecast was iffy all day, so I dried off the bikes and stowed them in the lazarette.

Although iffy, all of the forecasts called for no rain before noon, so we took a walk up to East Chop.

The Martha’s Vineyard Chowder Company

We went to lunch just before the sprinkles began.

While it’s true that this place is famous for its award-winning chowder, they offer a very full menu and added Sushi this year.

We sat at the bar and were delighted to recognize our server from 2022.

His name is Alex. He first came to the island for summer work while attending school in Romania. Now he calls Martha’s Vineyard home.

Alex – 2024

He was very impressed when I showed him the photo I took in 2022.

Alex – 2022

I guess when you’re young, you don’t age much in two years.

No Brewskis

Be advised that a rental car took out their draft beer system a few years back, so the only brewskis you can order will come in a can or a bottle.

I came for the chowder, but we all wanted to sample the new Sushi offerings.

Jalapeno Margarita
BOWL MV CLAM CHOWDER (16oz) – $15
Made from scratch daily, Award-winning,
gluten free and amazing.

It’s easy to see why this chowder wins awards. The flavor is slightly different than traditional thanks to shredded celery. The broth is thin, but it comes across as thick thanks to all the shredded veggies.

Nigiri Deluxe – $30
nine nigiri (chef’s choice) and a spicy tuna roll

The Nigiri was fresh and authentic, but what really set this dish apart was the quantity of high-quality Sushi.

Seaweed Salad – $10

We managed to get back to the boat without getting wet and settled in for movie afternoon. The forecast called for clearing after four, but it never happened, so we enjoyed a matinee double-header.

The first movie was #1 on Netflix – Land of Bad.

It was a very good contemporary war movie with a ton of action and a great glimpse into America’s use of drones in battle.

The second movie was Silencer and it was also action-packed.

It must be nice being Danny Trejo and always being the go-to actor whenever someone needs an Evil Cartel Boss.

By 6:00, the rain had passed and left a raw afternoon. Surprisingly, we saw a handful of “party boats” tie up and crack a cold beverage.

Mikado

As you may recall, I did a full restaurant review on Mikado in May and asked all of you to check it out when you’re in OB.

My goal was to share this gem of an Asian Fusion Bistro and drive some business their way. Island restaurants only have a few months to make it in the summer and I didn’t like the small crowds I was seeing at Mikado.

I’m happy to report that they were nearly packed Sunday night.

And as always, the food was fresh, authentic, and delicious!

General Tso’s – $18
Mongolian Beef – $20
Pork Lo Mien – $15
Pork Fried Rice – $15

Notice how reasonable these prices are…

Not So Ritzy

One of my favorite things about OB is the live music at The Ritz.

I love Johnny Hoy and Rosie. My all-time favorite is The Holy Rock and Roll Revival.

They feature rock songs with spiritual or religious content and have been the Sunday night band at The Ritz for years.

So imagine my delight when we waltzed upstairs and scored a couple of spots ten feet from the band.

Based on their Venmo QR code, I guess the name of the band was WHO IS TWO BOYS. They started at 8:00 with an original song – Menemsha.

It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great. Then they went into some two-chord instrumental jam. It was loud, it was boring, and as a musician, I’d call it self-indulgent.

After three boring minutes, we left. I’m hoping these guys are just a fill-in for The Holy Rock and Roll Revival.

Monday we made the short (6 mile) run to Falmouth against a brisk north wind.

Next Up – Labor Day in Falmouth
