On Tuesday morning we were 12 days into our trip. We woke up in Manhattan and headed to our fourth state of the trip – New Jersey.
As mentioned yesterday, the North Cove Marina suffers from violent sea swells due the current and traffic on the Hudson River.
Around 7:30 we heard a loud crash outside the boat and ran out to investigate. The floating dock had rolled so violently that it smashed the board keeping the gangway on track.

We also noticed the line that held the gangway to the dock was severely frayed and about to snap.

Oh well, perhaps it was time to move on!
We couldn’t get into Liberty Landing until 11:30, so we decided to tour the Statue of Liberty and take a little run down the Hudson.

Liberty Landing Marina
Almost everyone I know who travels south from the northeast stays at Liberty Landing. It’s a large marina with full service and relatively cheap diesel.
That said, we were assigned to slip F01 and not only were we at the end of a narrow fairway, but I had to back our 18’ wide boat into a 19’ slip.

Oh well, we did have a nice view of the park!

The dock staff was very helpful. We planned to have lunch across the marina and they said “Just take the shuttle.
What they didn’t mention was that the shuttle only made the 1-minute crossing every hour.

We arrived at the Marina Office at 12:45 only to see that the next shuttle wasn’t due for 45 minutes!
A ten-minute Uber ride got us to lunch before we got to Hangry.

White Star Paulus Hook
We selected a highly rated neighborhood restaurant for lunch. It had a total diner vibe.

Like most eateries in old city neighborhoods, the prices were low, the portions were big, and the food was great.

American Hazy IPA, NJ 6.5%

Grilled Chicken, Crumbled Blue Cheese, Sweet Corn,
Egg, Crispy Bacon, Tomato, Avocado, Buttermilk

House Made Chili, Texas Queso, Fresh Pico
De Gallo, Lime Cilantro Sour Cream

Carrots, Celery, Blue
Mrs. Horne was enjoying the loud banter from a table of guys across the restaurant. She loved their thick Jersey accents.
On the way out she stopped and said:
“Are you guys firefighters by chance?”
“I have seven firefighters in my family!”
“Engine Company 9” the older one shouted. “I’m the captain, bring everyone shots!”

It wasn’t easy getting out the door without sitting down and doing shots with these fine men, but we made it!
After lunch, we walked down to the Colgate Center hoping to find something interesting…

I’m here to report that there really isn’t anything there worth seeing!
Company From California
Mrs. Horne golfs with a woman in La Quinta who grew up in New York. She’s an architect who still operates a real estate development company in SOHO.
On Tuesday night Carol joined us on Amazing Grace and took us to dinner in Jersey City.

We enjoyed her company all evening. Her business in New York has been buying and renovating old buildings for decades. Her father was great friends with Fred Trump and she’s known the president since they were kids (and that’s all I’ll say about that.)
Edward’s Steakhouse
Carol took us to another neighborhood restaurant…

It’s a few steps below street level and as soon as I walked in I started looking around for Tony Soprano.

Carol really hit a home run. Like the White Star, the food was great and the prices were reasonable.

straight up, dry, blue cheese olives
The bread service was perfect!

Warm, crusty, and served with soft butter.

14oz., rack veal chop, mushroom ragout
(veal au jus or hot cherry peppers)

hash brown potato cake and Au Poivre Sauce
This was hands-down the finest 6-ounce filet I’ve had anywhere!
We returned to the boat just before dark…

As I prepared to pull out of our undersized slip I looked down at the piling 10” off the bow…

It had clearly been scraped more times than one could count. Focused on not being another and I succeeded!
Next Up: Stamford Connecticut
