Spread the love

Extending our holiday weekend in Falmouth made a lot of sense. It’s on the way home to Buzzards Bay, a short ride from OB, and one of my favorite Cape Cod villages.

It’s tough getting a slip at the Town Marina because the dockage fee is always a bargain. We were charged $215 for our 60’ boat. A few years ago we stayed here in October and dockage was only $1.00/foot.

Boating and Politics

I crossed my own line in the Sunday post by discussing a little politics on this site. It appears to have cost me one follower, which is unfortunate. If you too were offended, my apologies.

That said, the whole Boaters For Trump thing feels like more than politics as usual along the South Coast.

Monday saw another massive Trump Boat Parade begin in Falmouth, continue to Woods Hole, Vineyard Haven, and conclude in Oak Bluffs.

They passed us in Falmouth and it was a least 100 boats long continuing for about 45 minutes.

In retrospect, perhaps this site is no place for politics, but 100 boats teaming up on the ocean for any reason – political or not, is something significant and I report on the significant.

And that’s all I’m going to say about that!

The Falmouth Raw Bar

For decades I’ve walked past the Raw Bar on the way downtown to eat. Years back it had a lousy rating on Yelp and I never rechecked it until last October. The rating was still around 3 stars, but none of them were about the food. A lot of people don’t like plastic cups and reusable baskets, but most loved the food and the ambience.

We enjoyed our first visit and returned for lunch on Labor Day.

Serving food in baskets doesn’t bother me, but I do prefer my IPA in a frosty glass!

It has a great beachy vibe…

The Raw Bar has a large menu with all the typical seaside fare.

Chicken Wings
plain with buffalo and blue cheese on the side

The wings aren’t prepared in the classic Buffalo style. They are more like Old School Massachusetts Chinese restaurant style. They were great nonetheless; large, crunchy, and all drumettes.

Tater Tot Basket
Crunchy and extra crispy

This is a massive basket. All three of us attacked it and barely finished half.

Poki Ahi Tuna Bowl
Sushi grade yellowfin tuna in soy sauce, avacado,
ginger, sesame oil and sesame seeds
(2) Mates Dog
grilled with chips

I’m not sure how the large plate dinners would come out and I’ll probably never find out!

Autumn Already?

We headed back to the Skydeck and discovered it was too cool to sit in the shade. Funny how Saturday (8/31) was too hot to sit in the sun and with the arrival of September, it’s now too cold!

Downtown For Dinner

As the sun began to set we took the one-mile walk to town. I had confidently told the crew we’d be eating the uber-popular Anejo since I knew they now have an online waitlist.

As we left the marina I went to their online waitlist and immediately got a 50-minute wait time. It’s a twenty-minute walk to downtown, so we had thirty minutes to kill in the village.

Note to Self: Get on the Waitlist sooner next time!

There’s a new Bar & Grill under construction…

COMING SOON – that’s a good sign for Falmouth, Cape Cod, and Massachusetts.

Anejo Mexican Bistro

As you may know, I’ve spent much of the last 35 years in California and almost 20 in the southern desert just 75 miles north of Mexico. I’m not bragging, but as you might imagine, I have a pretty good palate for Mexican Food!

I think Anejo is serving the best Mexican food in New England and ranks among the best in America.

The interior is Mexican Chic…

I’m not a huge margarita guy, but I never pass up the

Anejo Margarita La Casa – $12.50
tequila blanco, Patron Citronge,
organic sugar cane, squeezed lime

I spiced mine up with a touch of habanero.

Anejo Enchiladas Verde – $19.50
slow-roasted pork or ancho-braised chicken
with tomatillo verde sauce, Oaxaca-jack cheese, sour cream
Anejo Tuna Tostada -$16
chili rubbed seared ahi tuna, arugula, black bean, avocado salsa, pineapple hot sauce, cucumber pico, pickled red onion, scallion
Anejo Tres Tacos – $18

Carne Asada
grilled marinated steak, soft local corn tortillas,
Oaxaca-jack cheese, avocado salsa, charred scallion,
white onion, cilantro, cotija cheese

Pollo Elotes
grilled achiote marinated chicken, soft local corn tortillas, Oaxaca-jack cheese, poblano-corn pico, cumin-chili aioli,
cotija cheese

Pork Carnitas
slow roasted pork, soft local corn tortillas, Oaxaca-jack cheese, salsa verde, onion, cotija, cilantro

My traditional favorite at Anejo is their Carnitas Nachos – which is more of a platter of individually crafted tostadas than a nacho.

But think I’ll be sticking with the Tres Tacos going forward.

By the way, there are two other Anejos in Massachusetts. Hyannis has been around for a while. Plymouth just opened on Main Street, next door to the Speedwell Tavern.

Bluebird Tuesday

As the sun came up Tuesday morning, I felt bad for my fellow Buzzards Bay Boaters who work for a living. Despite the 50° temperature, it was a perfect Bluebird Day.

We headed home around 10:30 amid glasslike seas.

About a mile southeast of Cleveland Light, I suddenly spotted what looked like a body floating in the middle of Buzzards Bay.

Upon closer inspection, it was too big to be a person, and concluded it was a Giant Sea Turtle. They are called Leatherbacks and can grow to 9’ long and weigh as much as 1500 lbs.

After taking pictures we hailed the Coast Guard Station in Woods Hole and reported the coordinates. They said they’d send a boat to take a look.

Peter also posted everything on the Buzzards Bay Boaters Facebook page. About two-thirds of the turtle was submerged and the remains would do some serious damage if struck at speed.

I’m guessing this old boy was close to 50 years old due to the size. I hope he had a natural death and not a boat strike.

I really like the OB-Falmouth vibe. Next time, I think we’ll do two days in each.

We’re watching the weather and hoping for a short weekend back in OB before Boys Week on Block Island.
